A computer virus is a malicious program that is developed by individuals who want to cause harm or disruption to computers and systems. They are coded bits which are linked to other applications or programs, and, when activated, spread like wildfire. Typically, viruses are discovered in a document or program that has been downloaded from the internet or shared via email. Most countries believe that the creation and spread of a computer virus is illegal.

In the world of computer viruses, there are several different types that can infect the machine in various ways. Certain computer viruses are dependent on an application to start their work. Others are autonomous and are able to attack multiple systems without the need for a host. Computer viruses that utilize host programs to infect computers are often called worms, but those that do not employ this method of infecting through other programs are referred to as viruses.

Certain viruses may begin to infect systems as soon they arrive, whereas others remain inactive until the user accidentally executes the code. The first computer virus was created in 1974 and behaved similar to a biological virus by rapidly multiplying itself and causing damage to the system.
